As a fan of J.T. Geissinger and her remarkable contributions to the romance genre, particularly the outstanding [b:Perfect Strangers|49730872|Perfect Strangers|J.T. Geissinger|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1568641242l/49730872._SX50_SY75_.jpg|71910360], I approached this mafia romance with high expectations. However, despite the author's proven track record, I found myself grappling with certain aspects that influenced this rating.
The characters proved to be a pivotal factor. Natalie, unfortunately, lacked a distinct personality and read like a doormat throughout the majority of the narrative, only revealing a semblance of depth in the final 20%-15% of the book. Kage, on the other hand, left me with emotional whiplash as his personality shifted abruptly from mafia boss to swooning Romeo within the same paragraph.
The dialogues between the characters felt somewhat forced and, at times, slightly corny, creating a dissonance with the established personalities, particularly Kage's.
Amidst these concerns, a shining beacon was Sloane, whose friendship with Nat brought a genuine warmth to the story. Sloane's character, a true girl's girl, stood out, and I'm eager to explore her narrative in an upcoming book. She emerges as the true queen in this tale.
On a positive note, the audiobook narrators, engaging in a full duet, delivered an exceptional performance that deserves commendation. Their skillful narration added a layer of depth and immersion to the story, enhancing the overall experience. The smut scenes are *chef kiss*.
While this book may not have lived up to my expectations, as a longtime fan of Geissinger's work, I remain optimistic about future reads.

If I'm being honest the first few times i seen the word *unalived* i was so close to putting the book down. I don't know what it is about that word, its just as annoying as moist. thank the lord the mmc had more common sense.
the story was gripping thereafter and i was persuaded into continuing on with the queens and monsters series.
