the ending is disgusting and female characters just serve as vehicles for boosting and inflating the protagonist’s ego. have a nice read:)

What the fuck did I just read. From the completely unlikable characters to this weird layer of misogyny covering the whole story, I hated all of it. Constant oversexualization of women, infantilization of them during sex, a ridiculously long lesbian rape scene evolving a minor, holy shit...

I am undecided on how I feel about this book for a variety of reasons. The main character is one that I enjoyed and I found his view and his takes on life to be refreshing. He was a flawed human, but he acknowledged that fully, and there was something inherently likeable in his own measure of himself that I connected to. But I hated the women and I think that was likely a measure of my own shortcomings and my own experiences with men that made me want to shake my fist at them going “What are you doing!!! Can’t you see how depraved these men are making you? Don’t you know you deserve better?!” Maybe I am just not accustomed to Japanese literature and the themes inherent in them, but gah, this book mainly just made me mad, confused, or sad.

I liked the prose: it's efficient, sensitive, poetic, natural. There are some scenes, some imagery, that will remain with me like paintings. Otherwise, I did not enjoy any of the characters, the narrator's misogyny made it hard to get through the book, and I am left to feel unsure about the value of the observations about life, death, and mental illness given throughout this tale. I will give it this: both the ending and one specific character arc added a note of mystery that will stay in my head for a while.
