I really did not want to read this, the series jumped the shark in the previous instalment, and I didn’t really see how it could be revived. All the questions were answered, all the character mysteries solved, and a huge dose of near-parody became the overarching sense of at least two of the main characters.

But you don’t get away so easily from a series into which you’ve invested enough time to read 8 entire novels without being tempted to try just one more.

In fact, this novel was much more of a return to the old formula, as if the author had a bit of a funny five minutes and had to get something out of his system. He’d perhaps got tired of writing well-paced police procedurals and fancied writing an action movie script. Now he’s got that out of his system, he can get back to normal.

This was okay, if not amazing.

I guess I will have to read the next one since it will be the last novel in the series, so I will finish it. There’s enough interest and investment there, and I have grown to be fond of some of the characters, so I would like to see how it all resolves. 7/10

This is the weakest book in this series, unfortunately. The case of a serial killer is quite interesting but it is not clear how the police find clues and solutions, the dialogue is bad, Carl is really annoying correcting Assad all the time... I guess it's time this series comes to an end.

Also, and this is just me, there is too much talk about the pandemic and I am not ready for that.

A mystery within a mystery... such a perfect thing to do in a Scandinavian Noir novel! And this book is an excellent reminder that not all mysteries are solved.

I have long loved Mørck and his Department Q team. They are a well oiled machine and work incredibly well together. This novel takes place mid-'corona' (as it is affectionately called! lol) and cases are spiking which is playing havoc with how Carl and his team can work. But they manage some very furtive work arounds and as the clock ticks down... will their rush to catch the killer be successful? No spoilers here, sorry!

I highly recommend this series (and I cannot wait for the next installment!)
