Things I liked:
- How everything tied up in the end.
- Depictions of familial trauma
- Tension in beginning
Gripes:
Casual transphobia. I listened to this on audiobook so I’m not sure what the exact line was, but it was something like, “her ex husband decided he was going to be a woman.” You don’t decide you are a woman. Trans people are their gender, they just transition.
The fact that Eleanor didn’t shave at 14?? Idk I shaved at 11.
The other thing was that I had a hard time relating to the Keeper because I wasn’t sure what her relationship was with Eleanor in the beginning. With Mea (not sure spelling, again, listened on audiobook), I already sort of “knew” she was Esmerelda, so the Keeper threw me off as a random plot line. In the end, I realized who she was, so I made a deeper connection with her, but I wished I could’ve made that connection earlier.
