It felt like reading a story from a MacGyver episode. This girl knows how to fix a car, fly an airplane, fight with the bad guys, stay calm in stressful situations. Not to mention that she manages to escape unscathed after an encounter with a gorilla, lion mountain and polar bear.

This is a book that I got in a subscription box. One I wouldn't have picked up on my own. I enjoyed it well enough but probably not enough to continue on with the series. Happy to mark it off my TBR.

Really more like 4.5 for this one. It’s been sitting on my shelf for ages and I’m so glad I picked it up. Alex Carter is a badass biologist and environmentalist, and I’m looking forward to starting the second story, A Blizzard of Polar Bears, soon.

Written with great atmosphere and a fair amount of suspense, Alex works to study the wolverine population in northern Montana. But something isn’t quite right as she encounters threatening notes and other messages warning her away. Great side characters abound and the climax unfolds at breakneck speed. And a bigger mystery lingers for Alex even as she moves on to her next adventure.

Highly recommend this for the mystery & atmosphere as much as for the environmental and educational aspects of man’s impact on nature. Thanks to William Morrow Books for my gifted copy of A Solitude of Wolverines.

Maybe 4.5 stars! I don’t read much in the thriller genre but this was action packed. I listen in one go, only taking a few short breaks and finished it up snow shoveling in the dark checking behind me constantly. This author is local-ish to me and I discovered them through our local paper. A wildlife biology solving mysteries while doing research? Catnip boxes checked. Add in a creepy lodge, The Shining style, a secret murdering protector and action from the first page and I was hooked. It was frustrating from the beginning, idiot boyfriend, no one believes her or helps her, the terror she would feel from all the people against her, came through the page.
Will definitely be continuing this series.

The book details the story of a biologist who runs into some trouble with the locals while doing a survey for wolverines on an old ski resort turned into protected land. I thought this book would be better than it was. It started out promising but I felt it kept getting more and more unbelievable as the book went on.

It was overall alright. Because it's the start of a series, there's a whole side thing that doesn't really go anywhere or get resolved, I assume it will be an ongoing thing in the series. It wasn't very interesting to me though and I don't know if I will continue to the series.
It was nice to learn a bit about wolverines. Some big cats are mistreated.
The main character is adamantly against cattle farming for its effect on the environment and so is a vegetarian, yet still eats dairy. Dairy is still part of the cattle industry, still gotta clear land to feed those cows. I don't understand this disconnect. But then, when people try to go vegan, dairy is often one of the hardest things to give up, certainly was for me, so it could be considered realistic. Doesn't mean it didn't bother me for the rest of the book, though, since she didn't even address it at all despite having a whole thought-rant about it.

Overwritten and over enthusiastic. And conservation mysteries are generally something I like.
