Why did it take me so long to read this beautiful, heart-shattering, lovely and magnificent book? I cannot believe it ended the way it ended. But that one page in the Epilogue with the title of a name, was the greatest gift this book could have given me.

I feel sad but most of all angry. Angry that the world of this book is not fiction, the stories are but the events are true, these things happened, people died, people were left behind and millions of people suffered in ways that I still can’t imagine. We take so many things for granted, those shoes on your feet, that clean water from the sink, that fridge full of food, that dinner table loaded with warn food made by people you love and even that lightbulb above you. It amazes me that no matter how much we read and try to understand, we never will be able to fathom the pain and helplessness people felt in times of war and under the hands of dictators at that time. Unless we go through it ourselves.

Yup, I’m that girl that gave The Book Thief a one star review. Sorry!!

I’ll start by saying I typically do not enjoy reading stories about the holocaust, nazis, Germany, etc. I don’t know why, it just doesn’t interest me. I’ve tried, I promise! I am so down for reading about other historical themes and countries, but this genre just doesn’t hold my attention or interest me.

That being said, I decided to give this book a try because of all the five star reviews. My friend even said she gave copies of this book to her friends and family as Christmas gifts. It must be good, right?!? I wanted to like it, I really did! But alas, different strokes for different folks.

I read all 500+ pages and it felt like a bunch of short stories that came and went and then death would speak up and then we’d go back to more short stories. Sorry guys, I gave it a solid try. Maybe it’s me and not the book??
