This is a difficult book, but not needlessly so. It's grappling with real life and real history in a very impactful way.

I had given it 4.5 stars when I first finished it. Now the Oppenheimer movie has come out and discussions of the Manhattan Project are all over the Internet, so I've been thinking of this book a lot lately. This book, almost two years after I finished it, still puts a pit in my stomach. Not many books really affect me so strongly for such a sustained amount of time, so I changed my rating to a full 5 stars.

However, it's a very difficult read, so I can't really offer a blanket recommendation to everyone. If you want to delve into the horror of the atomic bomb as expressed by Oppenheimer's quoting the phrase "I have become death, the destroyer of worlds," then this book is for you. If you don't want that, or don't think you could handle that, I recommend you do not read this.
