I have missed this series so much and was so pleased when I found out we would be getting another taste of our witch/demon family. If you are a follower of this series and are debating on getting hooked in again for however long it lasts, just do it...so worth it!

American Demon was the perfect return to the Hollows. I'm so thrilled for a fresh beginning/continuation. I'm so thrilled Kim brought back my favorite series in the best way. Keep them coming please!!

I was SO excited when Kim announced she'd be returning to The Hollows, and a little nervous too! She had ended the series so well, and I hadn't enjoyed [b:The Turn: The Hollows Begins with Death|31180840|The Turn The Hollows Begins with Death (The Hollows #0.1)|Kim Harrison|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1484305708l/31180840._SY75_.jpg|49517218] (#14/0 depending on the ranking system), the series prequel, nearly as much as I'd hoped.

The first half of this book seemed shaky to me. In an effort to draw new readers, and jog the memories of the old, the story is prefaced by a long timeline style infodump of major events and players, styled as an IS file. Super cute and clever idea but written awkwardly in places.

Then we get to the story. A few months after she saved the world and Rachel, being Rachel, can't help attracting trouble again. Part of it isn't her fault: creating the new Ever After allowed an ancient Elven weapon to escape and it's turning loved ones against each other, causing murders over long-forgotten grudges.

The other half - being unsure of where she stands with Trent - is because she's too caught up in her own head. Which isn't unusual but when Ellsabeth turns up again (she and Trent share custody of the girls), Rachel's self-confidence crumbles in a sad and heart-breaking way. It's also very frustrating to the reader.

However, around the midway mark, things finally start to come together (zombies are involved!) and the story zooms on to a breathtaking cliffhanger (I need to find out what happens to poor Bis RIGHT NOW!).

It ends with old friends around the Thanksgiving table, albeit an unconventional one, and it's an apt closing because returning to this world and its characters is like catching up with old friends you'd thought were gone for good.

I found the new character of Hodin - a dark pixy demon and exile who was punished for mixing demon and elf magics like Rachel - to be very intriguing and a good foil for shaking up Rachel's relationship with her mentor Al. I also love the idea of crazy Newt as the Goddess, up there pulling strings and helping Rachel along, in her typically cryptic and maddening way.

Excellent series return, and I can't wait for [b:Million Dollar Demon|55420213|Million Dollar Demon (The Hollows, #15)|Kim Harrison|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1608334004l/55420213._SY75_.jpg|74551003]!

It was fun reading this series again. The author totally could've ended it with book 13 six years ago. I love that she started it back up again.

While I missed Al not being in the story very much, I really liked Hoden. You can tell he's gotten the bad end of the stick when it comes to the demon collective believing him and liking him. I'm excited to see that change as we learn more about him.

So sad for what happened at the end, but I know Rachel, Trent and the gang will be able to figure it out and fix it.

It was sooooooo good to have the gang back together!

There are new changes happening and growth....which is what happens as family expands.

I will admit, my poor heart is broken over the events of the ending... I hope Kim gives us closure for that bit of the story.
