An escaped convict, a woman and her son hiding from her abusive husband and a giant police officer - all cone together on Dutch Island which is also known as Sanctuary. Something else is waiting for them on the island too and it's been waiting for a long time. Loved this book - must read more John Connolly.

Reading this book was like reading an exercise in imitating Stephen King, even to the Maine setting. It was okay---diverting enough but certainly could not match King even at his worst.

Although I've read most of the Charlie Parker novels, I think this book is my favorite by John Connolly so far. Perhaps because the story is bounded by the island. Perhaps because it's bounded by time. I mean it's a story with a beginning, middle and end. If you've read the Charlie Parker novels you know they all kind of start somewhere else and never quite resolve. If you'd like to sample a stand-alone John Connolly that's less brutal than some others, I recommend this one.

Wow! I didn't think I would ever like anything that Connolly wrote that didn't involve Charlie Parker bug this was a great stand out novel! I liked the characters, I liked the back drop and I liked the storyline! Twists I did t see coming! Excellent! Highly recommended!

Notes:

Not as engaging as the Charlie Parker stories but a cool mix of history, supernatural & crazy people.

Kebetulan mood sedang ingin mengahbiskan buku John Connolly. Sama seperti seri Charlie Parker, buku ini merupakan gabungan antara contemporary, police procedural & fantasy, walau unsur police proceduralnya sedikit. Disini ada tokoh Sharon Macy yg kehadirannya diceritakan sekilas di The Wolf in Winter.

There is so much to say about Bad Men. This book sat at the bottom of my checkout pile for ever. I dont know why I did not pick it up right away. Once I did I couldnt put it down. Before begining the story I read a handful of reviews, a recent habit of mine. Most reviews were not pleased with the book but gave it a solid 3 or 4. Odd. Bad Men is a solid five on my list. Not a single complaint. There were a ton of characters so it did take a minute to register each and their back story. I personally loved the abundance of characters and ghosts. For me, the ghosts were just a bonus. The way John Connolly swapped back and forth between stories frequently kept my interest and desire to turn the pages faster. The writing was perfection. Not a bad thing to say. Everything someone disliked (not referencing to avoid spoilers) in a review I found to be part of the island charm.

Not a bad book, just not a good one either. The ending feels unearned, the conflict is built in the wrong direction, and the genuinely interesting characters are left undeveloped.

Still not sure if it was a crime novel or a supernatural thriller. Instead of being a fun mashup the lack of definition manages to be just plain confusing.

Go read the Samuel Johnson novels if you want some good Connolly.
