It's a morally-driven tale of personal redemption, featuring fewer characters than either War and Peace or Anna Karenina. Here we focus on one man and a single story line that spirals around a long-forgotten incident in his youth, which turns out to have had tragic consequences for another. The hero is the young St Petersburg aristocrat, Prince Dmitri.

Prison commentary - on point. Why is it though I am significantly more willing to sympathize with Dostoevsky's murderer than I am with Tolstoy's rapist?

I thought this was a wonderful book! I liked it more than War & Peace even (although I only read the abridged version of W&P). It helps I think that I read about Tolstoy's life, it gives greater meaning to the story. One of my favorite parts in W&P was a man laying on a battlefield seeing the sky as if for the first time and contemplating life; Resurrection feels like an entire novel inspired by a moment like that. Beautiful

It's a book about unjust systems that persist only due to the fact that those able to change the system never encounter its flaws as they use connections and money to evade justice. Why fix a system, when you can just pay a little and avoid it entirely? And when a mistake happens, it's only going to affect the poor and the powerless, so who cares?

A mistake in the handling of the case of a young woman costs her her freedom. The man who could have spared her, sits by out of cowardice due to a historic connection that threatened to embarrass him. Thereafter he seeks to fix his mistake. Their paths crossed twice and both times he was weak. Will a newfound strength of character offer him an opportunity to challenge everything?

That's my book hook write-up. But it doesn't quite capture everything. What the book becomes is a masterwork of observation. Of both human drives and society's demands. A keen examination of class and bureaucracy.

Nothing has changed. The people who run the system never have to use the system. Then along comes someone with the perspective, position and intellect to change the system. And they instead choose to distance themselves from the corruption and take themselves off in exhile...

Read this one before you read any other Russian literature. It's well paced, sharp and powerful.
