It starts out kind of slow but do not give up! The story becomes more complex and the characters funnier for every chapter. Great plottwists and constant chaos. Side note: love a fantasy where no one has any powers at all.

Yes, this understood the assignment! Every step of this epic heist is a little heist of its own, all of them nerve-wracking and fun as hell.
I know this type of brick-thick hard high fantasy is declining in popularity, but when you get a good hook it just works. There's enough uniqueness in this world-building to rise above the standards of the genre, when otherwise it would be just one of many. I'll even forgive it for the few times it seems a little forced.

Questo è un libro solidissimo. Ha dei buoni personaggi, una buona trama con anche dei discreti colpi di scena, soprattutto il sistema magico e il worldbuilding sono estremamente curati nonché particolarmente originali, considerando soprattutto quanto impatto ha l'aspetto religioso nella storia, che non è messo lì solo come caratteristica secondaria.
Inoltre, è persino quanto promette! Benché sfondi nell'epic fantasy, indubbiamente anche l'aspetto delle truffe o che il protagonista sia un truffatore sono predominanti.
Tuttavia, non è riuscito a prendermi al 100%. Parte della colpa è mia - a volte capitano dei libri che pur validi non riescono a entrare nelle nostre corde. Qui specificatamente io ho trovato anche questi problemi:
- a volte è un po' "too much", sia nello stile, sia nelle spiegazioni, sia nelle truffe. L'autore perde tanto tempo a spiegarti le cose e se da un lato va benissimo perché come ho detto il worldbuilding è sensazionale, dall'altro a volte ho avuto l'impressione di una lentezza estrema e procedevo a fatica; a questo vorrei aggiungere che in un libro sulle truffe a me sarebbe piaciuto essere sempre sorpresa, mentre l'autore, soprattutto verso il finale, tende a sorprenderti più non con la truffa in sé ma su quello che va storto e spende pagine a raccontarti come sarà la truffa (non è un difetto, è una scelta narrativa).
- venendo da storie di ladri che hanno anche fortissime amicizie come Jean/Locke o Hadrian/Royce, devo dire di non essere stata comprata qui dalla Ardor/Raek - complice temo il fatto che Raek non abbia un POV, che lo fa sembrare non un protagonista ma un side-kick ai due effettivi protagonisti (Ardor e Quarrah)
- la maledetta storia d'amore! Nel momento in cui Quarrah è apparsa ho pensato "toh, l'interesse amoroso" e non sono stata sorpresa quando lei e Ardor hanno dovuto fingere di essere fidanzati durante la loro truffa, trope 100%. Purtroppo mi dispiace perché non trovo Quarrah un personaggio mal scritto, ma è indubbio che alla fine finisca per essere tanto trascinata dalla figura di Ardor e in ogni caso la loro storia è proprio basic: si conoscono, si frequentano causa truffa, bam sono innamorati. Anche il confronto con l'ex di Ardor non è niente di che, francamente lei viene più utilizzata come deus ex machina che come personaggio vero.
Resta comunque un validissimo libro e avendo letto le storie degli altri due seguiti, non vedo l'ora di continuare!

This was a really fun read. Some great, compelling characters with a plot that kept you engaged with action and laughter. The only reason why it gets 4 stars and not 5 is that Part 3 and Part 4 left a little to be desired but I loved the beginning and ending of the book. Ready for #2!!

Trotz den vielen Seiten (800) habe ich das Buch in nur wenigen Tagen verschlungen. Die Geschichte entwickelte gleich zu Beginn eine unglaubliche Sogwirkung auf mich, die nie richtig nachgelassen hat. Ich mochte die Charaktere, auch wenn es gerne mehr zu den zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen hätte geben können, als die bloße "Rolle", die ihnen vom Autor zugeteilt wurde. Das Magiesystem fand ich auch wunderbar, hier wird nämlich mit einer Substanz namens Malm gezaubert, von der ich auch gerne die ein oder andere "Sorte" Zuhause hätte.
Die Geschichte war mal extrem spannend, mal ein wenig langsamer und schaffte dadurch einen guten Ausgleich. Trotzdem war ich nie gelangweilt oder genervt, ich konnte das Buch nämlich meistens nicht aus der Hand legen. Der Schreibstil war einvernehmend und man konnte vollends in eine neue Welt abtauchen. Auch nachdem ich fertig war, habe ich sogar noch von Ardor, den Inseln und den Drachen geträumt.
Zum Ende gibt es (zum Glück!) auch keinen Cliffhanger und die Geschichte scheint vorerst in sich abgeschlossen. Ich bin gespannt auf den Folgeband und habe mir das Erscheinungsdatum schon im Kalender notiert. Ein wirklich epischer Auftakt, der mich begeistern, überzeugen und total überraschen konnte!

This book had a lot of potential but was little over long, pacing was slow, and got a little too detailed. The magic system was interesting, but over explained which got a little dull. All of this could have been minor, but the ending was not my favorite which made it harder to overlook the other problems. Bottom line, I liked this book, but not enough to pick up the sequels.
