For the first time in a very long while, I read 'The Last Girl Guide' in one sitting. It was just so good, I couldn't put it down.

The story is told in form of Harper's diary entries. Harper is a 15 year old girl who is extremely lucky to be alive. One of the biggest threats is the packs of wild, rabid dogs that hunt in packs. Whilst scavenging food one day, Harper comes across a friendly collie named Sal, who she takes in and forms a special bond with. Without spoiling too much of the story, it very much is a book about a journey with important consequences. One of the best things about the book is the interaction between Harper and Sal, because the author does a great job of personifying Sal without the use of dialogue.

While the story picks up roughly a year after the initial outbreak of the 'pox' epidemic, there are parts of the story that flashback to both before the outbreak began, and at the onset of it. I really enjoyed learning about Harper's upbringing and it helped understand why the character is the way she is – especially through the use of Harper's mother.

The last quarter of the book takes a different turn to the rest of the book, which makes me want to see a sequel that deals with the events of the climax of the book even further. I certainly would love to learn more about the world the author has created.
