This is a continuation of the Lost Fleet series. A series I rated at a consistent 3.5 stars. I liked the main plot mechanism (ragged isolated fleet fighting its way home) and the main character Geary was very interesting.
This series begins soon after the ending of the previous series and is populated by main characters from that series. The main plot mechanism is Geary initiating contact with an alien race and grappling with conspiracy issues concerning the Alliance.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me because it seems to be more of the same i.e. one epic battle after another against overwhelming odds and no end in sight. In addition, the relationship between Geary and Tanya distracts from the story and feels wooden and unwieldy. I felt he did a good job with this relationship in the first series but it just gets in the way here.

I almost gave this three stars since I like the series so much, but I was disappointed in this book. The beginning was very slow and far too full of politics. Once the action finally did pick up, things moved far too quickly. Seven star systems in one page? Wow. And then right as things got good, it ended. Obviously Campbell/Hemry is leaving this open for the next book, but this book was definitely short enough to just put it all into one. So while I will read the next in the series, because it can only get better from here, if the next one in any way resembles this one, I'll probably call it quits.

Between the narration and the writing, I just couldn't get through the first few chapters. Too many characters introduced too fast and I wasn't sure who were throwaways and who were important.

Didn't finish this but logging it because I want to make sure I don't accidentally start reading it again. This is "book #1" in a series but once you start the book it's pretty clear that it is following some previous series with a lot of setup and character.

I started the book, the writing was awful and the motivation of the characters just stupid. I stopped very quickly.

Not a bad start to a new series, no real answers though on the Enigma race, or several other things. It ends with a lot of possibilities but no real clear idea of were the series is heading. In the first series you knew they were heading home, in this one there's a lot more uncertainty as to what happens next or in any further books.

By the time you get this far in the series you know the basic plot structure. It feels like another small episode in the overall story; a bit of politics, a dash of fleet dynamics, ship maneuvers, travel, and some space battles. I like the format so I don't mind it, and I'm still curious to see where the next episode takes us.
