I donā€™t mind an ā€œI see dead peopleā€ story, especially when dark magic and secret societies are involved. Ninth House was way too much for me in terms of cursing, sexual assault, sexual content, etc. I read far longer than I should have because the premise of the book is so compelling. And for a little while the content that bothered me just seemed to distract from the narrative, not overshadow it. But it quickly built up to eclipsing the story for me.

Leigh Bardugo is an excellent writer. Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom are new favorites from my reading list this year. But Ninth House was absolutely not for me.

The prologue and the first chapter read like it was written high on marijuana. Smh! There's so much unnecessary info dump and random cut offs of narrations that I couldn't comprehend where the hell the author was going with the narrative.

The heroine came out to me as a self centered, self righteous, harmonal teenager. Why? You may wonder. It's because she's whining about one thing or the other every two sentences and thinking about Darlington on every third. She's also kinda dumb and annoying.  Idk how the hell she got the job when she can't even follow basic instructions and endangered a group of people with her because of her rampant monologues of fuck knows what.

I don't think I can continue further because it's really hurting my brain to understand the story and the character. Even mathematics never gave me this kinda pain.

Anyway, this book was a part of a book club this month that's why I gave it a flip. I hope others enjoy it.

Maybe spoilers??

I enjoyed this book, however my main issue is the Darlington disappearance. To me, that seemed more important than the Tara murder, but by the end of the book they hadn't gotten him back and oh if you do want to see him come back read the next book. Like no I wanted to see him again in this book. It just felt like it kind of got lost in the other mystery and Leigh Bardugo went oops i forgot to write the end to this one so you will have to wait to find out if he's ok.

So many books that take me a while to get into I cannot get myself to give them a five star rating. But I can't bear to downgrade ninth house for my own mood when I started reading.

Alex and Darlington are such amazing characters and I am enthralled by this seedy, magical vision of New Haven. I loved pretty much everything about this book and I was expecting to find it super offensive after a fee reviews I saw tbh.

Had to immediately move on to Hellbent!
