is hugging the book after reading it is already a valid review? 

good Lord, i finished it this morning and honestly... idk. stared at the ceiling and can't put my thoughts together for nearly half an hour. tho, it felt there's more to the story that needed uncovering.

nevertheless, i'm feeling devastated, angry, frustrated, and sad when i finished it. this can be a dense read, it made me realize of things such as being contended, being hungry for more, how much a person can do for such things. 

at first, i'm feeling overwhelmed because there are lots of words i'm not familiar so i have to keep a dictionary beside me. and to mention, this is the first time i interacted with books again — in which i mean is i'm annotating, i'm looking for words, reaching out to google translate, and the footnotes? i love them!!

i personally think this book is slow-paced. it gets really boring in the middle of the book but i do think that the pace of it is meant to be like that so readers can fully absorb what they're reading. or i would suggest to grab a thin book to read along with babel so that you don't get overwhelmed. i personally don't like reading 2 books at the same time. i just thought of this incase u don't want to start this book bc of the overwhelming feeling, this trick might work ;) 

anyway, society... how cruel and sad and devastating :( i really wish right now that i can read this book again for the first time. 

translators deserves so much more than this cruel society. i hate the fact that i keep thinking what was his real name... i keep thinking why the characters have to experience such things...

So incredibly good and important, I loved it. The writing was fantastic as always and the story was super intriguing and gut-wrenching. Tackling heavy topics like racism and colonization were tough and it was hard to read at times because of how real it felt, but it was so well-done and was exactly how those conversations and feelings are.

So fuck Letty for real and she can rot for all I care, but it was so true to life in how someone like Letty would rationalize her decisions being truly unable to see the other side

. Overall, I really enjoyed it even though it was pretty slow-paced and I didn’t connect to the characters as much as I usually do.

Rebecca absolutely is not scared to kill her main characters at any time (I’m sensing a pattern lol) but I felt like Ramy, Griffin, and even Robin in the end didn’t impact me as much as it should have because I was invested in the story but not the characters as much

.

I want to open this review with the caveat that my five star review does not come without criticisms. I felt that some characters were denied robust inner lives, while others' motives were so hammered out that it felt redundant at times. In some sections, the pacing felt a bit drawn out. That said, "Babel" is an inventive, thoughtful, and serious reckoning with the relationship between empire and academia. R.F. Kuang simultaneously manages to capture the relentless, insurmountable nature of the colonial project, while exploring the many shapes that resistance can take. The central points of conflict feel both historically situated and uniquely relevant to contemporary conversations about global imperialism. Whether or not Kuang herself would define Babel as "dark academia", I do not know. Either way, the genre is greatly enriched by her voice.

This book was such a wild ride. My husband and I read it together and we both kind of struggled to get into the book at first just because it felt a bit slow and like it was dragging, but it picked up so fast in pace around the halfway point. I truly adored both Robin and Ramy as characters and as friends with each other; they felt very realistic to me and I rooted for both of them so much through the entire story. It destroyed me when

Ramy was killed

and we

then got to watch Robin fall apart over it

Letty's betrayal

didn't surprise me too much either since I had spent most of the first half of the book wary of her presence within the group. Overall, I really liked the author's writing style and I really appreciated the slow start in the first half of the book because it gave us time to really come to care about the characters and feel all of their ups and downs.

As someone with a history degree I also really appreciated the hard conversations and topics that the book portrayed. It led to lots of conversations with my husband (and my older mother who also read the book with us!) that I don't get many opportunities to have. I look forward to reading some of Kuang's other works after this for sure!

This is a masterpiece. I am probably very biased as a translator, but this is such a unique concept, it was well executed, it digs really deep into translation, colonialism, power imbalances, slavery and so much more within a framework that puts it into a new light without losing it's touch with reality. A hard read,

it definitely doesn't have a happy ending

, but it is well worth it anyway.
