Loved the first half. Made me reflect and encouraged deep thinking. I started good habits like go for walks and gaze at the moon and stars just from the first few chapters.

Did not like the second half. Imperialist Japan propaganda and the excessive pro western ideology became more apparent.  Him being renamed as Copper should have been an indication.

Context: Buddhism in India

“followers of Muhammed invaded India and persecuted Buddhists… But in the middle of the eighteenth century, India became a British colony” (pg. 262).

Interesting use of active and passive language.

“The British needed to govern India, they felt they should know India’s history” (pg. 262).

Oh, really?
I don’t think I need to elaborate on how pro western this book has been.

I’m really disappointed because I loved this book. I wanted to buy it. It had so many lines to annotate and words of wisdom. Oh well.

There isn’t much of a plot to this which strays from my normal type of book but I really enjoyed it.
It is a little information heavy.
In so areas it info-dumps on a few topics which I enjoyed but can be annoying if you are just trying to enjoy the story.
It made an impact on me.
I really liked how this book just made me stop and think about the little things in life. It caused me to appreciate things more deeply. I plan to even start a notebook just like Copper and his uncle did.
It was enjoyable to read.
The writing style was good and the translation was done well. It is definitely not a type of book that would be good for someone who is looking for something more of a plot. There is no climax or big thing but I really needed it. It was a good break/refresher to the books I normally read.

Deeply thought-provoking. Wish I had read it when I was younger. But even still, at my older age, I’m unsure of how I will live.

I purchased this book because I wanted to read it before Miyazaki makes his movie based off of it. It didn’t take long to realize that it would be better suited for someone younger. I did finish it though, and I have to say it feels almost incomplete.
