The beginning and end of this book were incredible. After reading the last 4 in a row, it’s going to be tough waiting for the next in the series. The middle did drag, but overall, I think it was a good continuation of the series. As a booktoker said recently, this is Sanderson’s magnum opus.

Unfortunately, this is my least favourite of the Stormlight Archives books so far. It was always going to be hard to top Words of Radiance but this did fall short for me and for the first time I felt the length of these doorstopper novels.

Of course, the weakest in a masterpiece series is still very good and there was lots that I really liked here. Some highlights were:
  • Raboniel - This series does heroes really well but the previous books haven't had particularly interesting villains. Raboniel broke this trend - menacing, intelligent and sympathetic I was on edge never knowing what she was going to do and what her motives really were.
  • Navani - She's always been one of my favourite characters and I am so glad she got her time to shine in this book
  • The scenes in Shadesmar especially
    Maya's testimony
  • The exploration of Kaladin's mental health and his journey to supporting others with theirs
  • The final chapter of the book was just beautiful!

The chapters containing the above were fantastic and gripped me as I know this series can but there was a lot to wade through to get to them. I think it was a mistake to not introduce
Venli's
flashbacks until two thirds into the book. The flashback POV chapters really anchored the previous books and I think their absence in the first third made this book feel a bit more directionless.

I still love this series and have no doubt that the end to its arc in the next book will be masterful. Maybe I will even look back on this book fondly as I am sure it will set events in motion for the finale. But for now I am still a little disappointed.

I think RoW was a really good in-between-ish worldbuilding type beat. It was a nice change of pace compared to everything that happened in OB. I really liked the exploration of fabrial science. It was so interesting and I found myself trying to figure it out along with Navani (even though I have approximately 3 brain cells /j).
I think I found it slow because there was a lot of "behind the scenes" activity. Like sneaking around, collusion, strategy, uncovering secrets, etc. Very much thinky thoughts. There were fight scenes ofc, but I think there was more character growth happening, which I really liked !! (Ngl there were some Kaladin lines that were like very obviously ✨inspiring✨ on purpose and they were very cheesy. But I ate that shit up bc I love Kaladin.)
I did cry in part one when
(TW for mention of suicide?)
Moash fucking tried to convince Kaladin to kill himself
yeah my friend was amused by my pain. Then I didnt really cry again until part five when
Teft fucking got murdered by Moash
bc that shit ripped my heart out and then it got smashed to pieces when
Kaladin was cradling his dead body
yeah Brandon Sanderson will be receiving my therapy bill /j
But of course by the end it wasnt TOO devastating; there were hopeful tones despite the impending suffering that I am bracing myself for.....
To end on a good note, some random things that made me happy:
-Kaladin and Adolin. Yeah.
-That scene at the tavern or something where Veil says she likes stupid women. Canon bi character hello???
-Aspec Jasnah !!!!!!!! I called it since WoK !!!!
-Kaladin finally getting some goddamn therapy
-Last but not least, can we all agree that GAGADIN was the cutest thing to ever happen??????
