An epic conclusion to the Duology, lots of character growth, zombies as promised, but also a deep revenge arc that flows through the entire story.

I loved this book for entertainment and so many various commentaries on womanhood, friendship, and race. There is a weird jump in time that makes it awkward and some random plot lines that were extraneous, but I loved it otherwise . I’m sad it’s over.

This was such a good follow-up to Dread Nation where you have Western influences, but you also got some good character development from Jane as she struggles with going for vengeance and keeping her humanity.
The only small thing I wish happened was Jane and Kate getting together. I wanted it so bad! Like I know Kate said she was ace and aro and I don't want to dismiss that representation for ace and aro people, but the way it was written...this could've been such an epic love story. The parellels with Jackson, Kate missing Jane so much when she's gone, Jane realizing Kate is too important to sacrifice for vengeance! We could've had it all!
I'm sure the author didn't mean to queerbait at all. She still kept Jane bisexual and maybe I was clouded in my own reading that the two read more to me as romantic than just best friends. But the author meant to have the two just be close friends who loved each other very much, and I can't fault her for that.

Feel like this could have been a five star read if the first part of the book just wasn’t there.
There is a time jump that happens, and I wish the book just started with the time jump. Gideon should have been revealed to be the villain  at the end of the first book.
I do appreciate the way this series showed that not even an apocalypse could magically ~equalize~ us.

I hated the time jump so much.
