I just finished the audiobook and the narrator with everything! It’s a unique love story told by narrator, and I think the audiobook made such a difference. Listening to the book you can tell what the narrator is saying versus reading the book the narrator and the main protagonist get mixed up in my head. I would highly encourage you to check this out from the library, I read it for free in my Libby app.

one of the first proper novels I ever read. this book helped me realise that sometimes you don't get happy endings, even in fiction.

Time to write my first review of the year! I’ve been in a sort of reading slump because I haven’t wanted to finish Harry Potter. HOWEVER, my mom brought this book home for me and I decided to just read it and oh my goodness, wow, pick this book up because it’s so short and sweet but absolutely powerful. Thank God I decided to read this because it was just what I needed.

So, let’s start with the plot. I love the idea of fate so obviously this book is a winner and to also be set in Paris? Yes ma’am. I recently went to Paris and I managed to connect some parts of my trip to this book, which made it even more special for me. It makes me think of that quote that says something like “what if you and I were only meant to part ways so that we could find each other again.” It just such a great book idea because you may think you’ve read stories about fate, but you’ve never read one quite like this. It’s original in the writing and characters and even the fact that it’s written in verse. Also, Clémentine Beauvais can write, wow. I adore how she made everything come full circle and how she described the characters and their feelings and aspirations and desires even. I’ve made a very bad habit of dog earring (I think that’s the proper expression 😂) my pages and this book has been through a lot in the past few days.

I loved and loved and loved Lensky’s character because he was an absolute sweetheart and the way he was written just tore my heart apart. “Knowing Lensky, he wouldn’t have just fallen like that, without a word. He was a boy who quivered with words. Before dying, he’d have given a speech.” (Page 162). We also talk a lot about representation of ourselves in books and I truly feel that I was represented by Tatiana in this book. She was passionate about her life, about stories, about love and by the end, she wishes to be free to pursue her education and what she wants most. She is also terrified of a simmered-out love, one that loses its spark and the idea of “being bored together”, which is so crazy relatable.

The best part of it all is that they don’t end up together, well they do, but they don’t. As much as I loved Eugene’s confessions and love arias and what not, do you know how great it is that they didn’t end up together? It’s not a cliché, it’s refreshing because sometimes that’s just how life goes and it’s so beautiful to see that she didn’t throw away her life, her education, HER PASSION, for a boy. I honestly didn’t know how I wanted this book to end because I came to have a love hate relationship with Eugene, but I’m so, so glad that it ended the way it did, like a mystery that’s up to you to decide.

Now don’t get me wrong, I did appreciate the love in this book and there was no shortage of good quotes and love stories in this book, i.e:

“Because those love goggles that you’re wearing, those universe-altering specs, those glasses tat make you feel so daring, I’ve worn them before, and I dare say that I’ll wear them again someday.” (Page 106)

“Being in love unsettled you internally, When someone steals your heart, they also steal your centre of gravity.” (Page 121)

“Not some crêpe-paper school-fête Hand-in-hand romance. I mean the kind of love you read about in books.” (Page 187)

I guess summary of this review is read the book, I loved it, all the things I love in a good book and then some in the form of verse. P.S look up the painting they talk about, you’ll appreciate them more. Until next time my dears :)

If I taught high school I'd teach this book. It appeals to a young audience but has poetry I'd confidently discuss with an old, white-guy poet. This book captures the youthful romance of the one that got away with literary elements I'm studying in my senior course.

Vraiment un livre très doux et poétique.
Le format se prête incroyablement bien à l'histoire et nous offre une romance toute calme et passionnée à la fois. Définitivement un livre que je conseillerais !
