The Laughing Heart is a well crafted story, one of revenge in a land seemingly populated by demonic horrors and fallen angels. There's a dreamlike quality that suits the narrative well for a short novella with little time to explain everything as the protagonist, Cailean, is often at a loss for understanding himself as he stumbles through the world. It works well and provides just enough background lore and world building going on to feel intriguing rather than overwhelming.

The prose is especially enjoyable, though perhaps overly verbose at times and with a tendency to rhyme I'm not fond of. As novellas go, or novelette's or whatever, it certainly did the job and I'm intrigued to read more in this world.
