Enjoyed the book overall, looooved Gideon and Grace! And dear Ozzie as well. I felt the characters were over the top at times, but Prue did resonate with me so I do forgive her as the FMC. I did side-eye Aunt Gussie and her “Oriental” sedan though. Some of the scenes that stood out include the first meet (bants galore), the park, the jewels (Gideon my heart), the wedding (Ozzie!),  and the final confrontation in the inn (pig slops). I think it seemed a bit like a sitcom, but it’s at least a sitcom I’d love to watch.

When you've just survived
violence and abduction
and are down to shag. My girl had a mission and i gotta respect her.

But damn the book was darker than expected. Make sure to check the trigger warnings before reading.

While I found some of this book problematic for me, I couldn’t get over how much the MMC adored the FMC. Some HRs with “ugly ducking” or “plain” FMCs take the path of her being undesirable and the FMC finds her beauty first in her personality and then in little features of her looks (if that makes sense). In this book he’s literally convinced that she’s a diamond of the first water despite what everybody else says and cannot perceive how anybody could think otherwise. Also, truly this is one of the only books I’ve read where the dialogue makes me laugh out loud. His banter is unmatched.

I had an issue with the pacing of this book. I thought it got off to a stilted and farfetched beginning. There were way too many plot points that fell into place far too conveniently, their first kiss came out of nowhere and then their relationship more or less stalled half way through. They shared a few kisses and then there was nothing between them but a lot of talking, which was fine, but throwing like three love scenes into the last 7% of the book felt like an afterthought. None of them seemed to serve any purpose outside of checking a box on the list of romance novel requirements. They could just as easily have not been there and I would have still enjoyed the book. I thought the FMC was too wishy washy about her feelings and wished the MMC struggled a little more with his. The drama with her original fiancé was too drawn out and I found it unconvincing that he was an unrepentant rake one minute and a perfect fiancé the next. It was entertaining enough and I appreciated the MMCs wit, but it overall fell flat for me.

A strange mix of light humor and darker topics. I'm not sure I've read a book that moved back and forth between child abuse and domestic violence to silly banter and flirtation the way this book does.
