Hace unos tres años que leí el primer libro de la otra trilogía de la autora y me gustó bastante. Tenía ganas de leer esta nueva novela de la autora porque pintaba bien y porque tenía piratas. Me ha decepcionado un poco o quizá no ha sido lo que esperaba y/o imaginaba que encontraría.
El sistema mágico me ha gustado mucho. Ha sido original, ha tenido su punto y quizá ha sido de los elementos que más he disfrutado de la novela a pesar de que no se profundiza del todo en ella. Sabemos algunos efectos, pero no sabemos qué más podrían hacer y esas cosas espero verlas en el siguiente. El sistema político ha estado bien: consejos piratas y un gobierno rebelde que ganó la guerra. Me habría gustado ver más de este sistema político también, quizá saber más sobre todo de los consejos piratas. El sistema religioso me ha gustado pero a la vez no, me gusta como afecta a la novela y a una parte de la población más que a otra aunque siempre influye a toda la población pero me faltó más. Además muchas veces sentía que había leído ya la explicación de algunas de las cosas ya explicadas y eso ha hecho que se me hiciera bastante lento de leer.
Los personajes me han gustado bastante en general. Lu ha sido una protagonista muy buena, pero me queda ver cómo evoluciona. Vex me ha conquistado por su personalidad. Nayeli también ha sido uno de mis personajes favoritos junto a Vex. Me encanta esta mujer y estoy deseando conocer su historia, lástima que no tiene mucha participación o no tanta como a mí me habría gustado. Edda también me ha gustado pero tampoco sale tanto como me habría gustado. Ben me ha gustado también y espero mucho de este personaje para la segunda parte. Teo y Gunnar también me han encantado y espero mucho de ambos. En general los personajes han estado genial, sobre todo Vex y Nayeli.

Pero eso sí, ese final ha sido apoteósico y no le perdono a la autora dejarlo justamente en ese momento. ¿¡Cómo espera que nos quedemos tan anchos después de leer el final!?

This was hard to rate. Because the first half was slow. It really took a long time to invest but once you did it was (ha) magic. I'd say about 3 or the first half of the book and about 5 for the last half.

Confieso que no iba a leer Las Aguas Rebeldes de Sara Raasch, pero varias recomendaciones (sobre todo la de mi mejor amiga blogger) me hicieron darle una oportunidad a esta novela. En diciembre suelo leer aquellos libros que he dejado de lado durante el año, así que me aventuré con esta lectura de una vez por todas. Aunque no me llamaba el libro por sí solo, ¡en realidad sí pensaba que Las Aguas Rebeldes me iba a gustar cuando lo leyera! Lamento decir que este no ha sido el caso, y me siento decepcionada :( ¡Pensé que amaría este libro! Y eso que no le tenía expectativas muy altas que digamos.

De lo que me gustó del libro, sólo diré dos cosas: la ambientación y la idea de la novela. El mundo en el que Sara Raasch sitúa su historia realmente me encantó, y da lugar a historias preciosas. Realmente adoré esta ambientación, desde su pasado hasta su presente, desde el rol crucial que desempeña en la trama, su importancia y la belleza con la que está construido. Y así, el planteo de la novela en cuanto a su trama sin duda me dejó fascinada, y da lugar a una historia bellísima.
Peeeero lamento decir que eso es todo lo que disfruté de esta novela :( Es una lástima, lo sé, y sé que muchxs la han amado. Siento que Las Aguas Rebeldes es una novela de fantasía que ya ha sido escrita antes y que no le aporta casi nada al género. No sé, he leído mucho de fantasía juvenil, y lamento decir que no encontré nada que me atrapara de este libro en particular. Me resultó repetitivo dentro del género y redundante dentro de los mismos clichés que vemos. La escritura de Sara Raasch, por más bella que me parezca, se me hizo bastante lenta y sentí que perdía tiempo con detalles e información que estaban de más. El ritmo del libro se me hizo eterno y casi no estaba pasando nada, y se utilizó mucho en la ambientación cuando no era necesario, en mi opinión. Los personajes no me parecieron nada nuevo, no vi mucha profundidad en esta historia, no logré conectar con la lectura... No sé, así podría seguir. Realmente es una pena que no me haya gustado, tanto con mis sentimientos como con una mirada objetiva hablando. Eso sí, espero que a ustedes les guste mucho más que a mí :)

I went into this book knowing what I was going to get so that didn't unhinge my enjoyment of the book. And I had a whale of a time reading it. There was a huge premise going into this book that there were gay pirates(and they are in like the background)but it should have been sold as gay princes and nobles which I loved that a high fantasy book with a world centred on religion that homophobia did not exist, that it was perfectly normal and rather common that same sex couples existed. And there's not a lot of pirating but honestly the way this book ends, there is going to be a lot of pirating in the next novel.
I just think that this book was pitched wrong. What it really is a political fantasy with pirate elements and a ton load of magical plants.
What I think could have improved it was having it fleshed out a little more, everything was almost there just not quite and I'm not in love with it but I really liked it and is way better then most ya fantasy's. It just missed the mark, but only just.

As for Vex and Lu, I don't really have an opinion on it, they can get together and I'll be fine with it but I'm not rooting for them.

Also this book deserves points for having a major plot twist that I never saw coming-they say where Lu and Ben come from but not where Vex comes from and so I should have seen it coming but I really didn't.And are Ben and Gunnar gonna be a thing because damm, I see something brewing there. I liked this but I never quite loved it, let me tell you why.
Pros:
-The premise of the book was the exact opposite of ‘And They All Lived Happily Ever After’ which was extremely unique and very interesting. The reality of, after a civil war, having to heal a fractured society, establish a new form of governance and uphold the promise of being better than the previous regime, were all addressed and explored in depth. It was so refreshing, you guys!
-Those plot twists! Those reveals! Some I saw coming while others I DID NOT!
-The women!! They were everywhere! Badass women who were fully fleshed out characters with their own autonomy. It’s a big yes from me!!
-And then!! of course I cannot not mention that this book contains a main m/m pairing and a side f/f pairing!! Another big yes from me!!
-I also liked how this book included issues such as immigration and identity. Though they weren’t explored in as much depth as I would have liked.
-Everything to do with Argrid was super interesting and I’m going to admit now that I enjoyed Ben’s POV the most.
-That cliffhanger!! Oh my god I need the second book now!!
Cons:
-The slow start. Nothing happened in the first 100 pages or so which was.. not great.
-The ‘magic’ system was confusing and definitely could have been explained better. At first I assumed that people in this world inherently had magic and that Argrid was opposed to those who had magical abilities, but no.. the only magic in the world was in the plants. That’s it. No spells, no powers, just the plants. This is a very interesting take on the whole magic theme but because it was never properly defined in the beginning, I spent way too much time trying to work out how magic worked and who had it.
-While the big reveals were entertaining(?), because they relied on withholding huge chunks of who the characters were, they made it difficult to understand all of the character’s decisions and motivations. It kept me from getting too close to them I guess.
-Now.. I liked the writing! I did. Except for the few times we were told but never shown certain things. For example, we were told about Dex’s ‘skills’ but we were never shown them! He was a legend, a figure that no one could catch because he was so skilled and cunning, but we never really saw that!!! (Don’t get me wrong though I still thoroughly enjoyed his character.. It’s just this one thing that frustrated me)
-This last point isn't really even a con. It's just that from what I'd read beforehand I had expected there to be gay pirates.. and while there were gay characters, besides from a minor side pairing there weren’t gay pirates. jsyk.
Anyway, I really did have a good time reading this, especially once the plot started to pick up and things started happening. I’ll definitely be grabbing the second book!

I was confused for a lot of this book. There was a war at some point and they are trying to sign treaties. Or something. I honestly don't know. I don't really understand the different lands or people or what. But I did enjoy the characters. I just kind of don't understand anything about the story.. I guess I get it more after the ending but I was just kind of going with it during the book. I don't understand if magic was ok where Lu was.. because she was doing magic right? Idk. I'll have to re-read it when the next one comes out.

This was one I bought on release day last year because I loved the idea of botanical magic. I've had it on my TBR for so long. I was looking forward to finally getting to this but...yeah this was a letdown. I just found it so boring? There wasn't anything for me to be excited about. The twists didn't hit me, the characters weren't that great, and I didn't feel a lot of the magic. It just flopped in a ton of places that I was excited for.
PS. Don't fall for people saying "gay pirate fantasy". It's not really a big thing.

I was worried when I started this that I was going to hate it since I keep DNFing YA fantasy. But I was far from disappointed! When a book actually throws a twist that I did not see coming from 100 miles away I am impressed. I was hooked pretty much from the start and the end had me begging for the second book. Loved it so much!
