  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
The power of Defoe’s ending is proven by 18th century publishers’ determination to alter it. We will never know how the two Roxanas, protagonist and narrator, came to be one.
This book felt long, but was also surprisingly entertaining. Though she had truly appalling moments, I can’t find it in me to hate Roxana.

Best of the Defoe novels. Always takes me forever to read, but it's important to my scholaring. The lack of clear timeline or chapters is a challenge, even for those of us who study this stuff.

Read for university. I found the theory of this book interesting, I enjoyed studying it- more than I did reading! Seems slow at some point. Interesting to look at as one of the first novels, topics including feminism etc, but not a book I would choose to read for pleasure.
