꧁꧁Book Review꧂꧂

The story follows Sable: lonely witch and daughter of Fate. Raised in isolation even among a witch community, Sable leads a solitary life reading strangers’ fortunes with the help of Fate’s divinity. Shaken from the recent execution in the district, Sable reads the fortune of a handsome stranger (turns out to be the prince, very Cinderella at the ball indeed!) and finds herself in a Selection-style competition in order to protect him from an assassination attempt.

This is one of those hidden gems that completely blew me away. I went in with zero expectations and ended up being totally sucked in by the witchy vibes and world building. I know others have found the similarities to other dystopian stories tedious but I quite liked the way they’ve been woven together in a slightly different way (I’m a sucker for a retelling/twists on stories that I loved when I was younger!). I really enjoyed the world building and felt right at home in Hunger Games-esque world with different districts.

I liked the relationship between Sable and Tauren and I’m glad that the ending didn’t require her to change or go against her beliefs so that they could be together. Tauren was swoon-worthy, obviously, and Sable was just enough bad ass and self-doubt for me to love her.

Overall, this is definitely a story for anyone looking for witches crash into dystopia. I can’t wait to jump into the next one!
