A quick-paced read. I liked the plot itself, very nicely thought up, and villain's character was intriguing. The main character was very flat, however, and many of the twists were predictable. Still, I would recommend it to anyone who fancies a bit of exciting light reading.

A nicely paced story, with a small twist at the end. It was an entertaining read that had a satisfactory ending. It didn't get too preachy as Koontz often does in his later books. I enjoyed it.

A very readable book that starts off strong but disappointingly fumbles the landing. I was fascinated by the moral complexities the main character of this book is forced to deal with at the end and the complicated ethical pretzels he’s turned around in as the plot progresses. At roughly the midpoint of the book, though, it feels a bit like Koontz is saying “okay, that’s a strong start, now let’s slow things down a bit.” You’ll know the shift when you read it because the book stops putting the main character into impossible situations and sees him become a bit of an investigator. Then revelations start to be revealed about his past that kind of flavor the story, but don’t really impact it all that much. By the time the ultimate showdown happens, it feels more like a nice, safe roller coaster slowly pulling up to its inevitable end than a high speed race zooming across the finish line. It remains readable the whole way through, but I stopped caring toward the end.

I enjoyed this more than I expected however the ending felt rushed and unsatisfying.
