I expected a lot more out of a Sylvia Day book. The story was a little slow and a little dragging. I was having and a hard time really getting into the plot overall.

Afterburn the first story in the Jax and Gia Duet was an enjoyable, sexy, quick second chance romance. That was fast paced and to the point. And whilst I would of liked a bit more of a back story I can't deny I was entertained reading it.

Would happily recommend.

Afterburn is the story of Gia, a career driven woman, and her sorted affair with her billionaire playboy, Jax. I wish I could say more about the plot, but there barely is one before the "book" ends and we move on to the second story Aftershock.

I'm a huge fan of the Crossfire series, so when I heard about another billionaire by Sylvia Day, I was stoked. I've had this one on my TBR list for a long time. Since I have been busy with my own writing schedule, and haven't had much time to read I decided I would go ahead and pick it up. It's a short read (or it should've been) and that's what I needed in my life. Unfortunately, it took me a week to read this. I don't read fast by any means, but the book is approx 120 pages. It shouldn't have taken that long.

However, I was having trouble sticking with the story about ten pages in. I love Sylvia Day. I feel that I need to say that before I go any further. She's an immensely talented author. That talent is the only thing that allowed me to give this book two stars. It is well-written. The problem is that it felt extremely rushed.

It's not just because of the lack of story development, but also because of the poor editing. I purchased the paperback version of this book, and was grossly disappointed in Harlequin. The fact that they packaged this book with so many mistakes is unforgivable. I'm not one of those people that get extremely hung up on grammar when reading indie novels. As an indie author, I understand that it can be difficult to find a decent editor at a reasonable rate. I used three for my debut novel and unfortunately, I still had to find another before putting out a paperback form. However, both Ms. Day and Harlequin have been in the industry for too long for me to overlook these errors.

Now on to the story line...be warned, this will contain minor spoilers.

This entire book is Gia saying, "I loved you" and Jax saying, "I want you". I tried digging deeper. There just isn't anything else there. The characters aren't well developed. The story doesn't progress at all. The entire book takes place over the course of three or four days and absolutely nothing happens. They reunite, have sex, and he screws her business deal. That's it. That's all she wrote. Literally.

I expected these books to be novellas when I first picked them up, but this read more like a poorly developed short story. I'm up to chapter 4 in the second book, and I'm finally starting to see some development. Perhaps, if this was written as one book instead of two things would've been different.

Like I stated before, I love Sylvia Day. I respect her as an author, and I know that she has an incredible amount of talent. This just wasn't her best work.

I read this book last week or something, and I already forget basically everything that happened. I remember an Italian spitfire who wants to help chefs open the restaurant of their dreams then an old flame comes back with a vengeance and tries to sabotage her chances of being successful.

I remember there being a lot of smutty scenes, but honestly, this book is hardly memorable at all, so I lowered the rating to 1.5 stars. It was at three initially after reading it, but thinking back, that was the 3 a.m. version of me speaking.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a fast-paced, light read. But if I can’t remember the plot or specific points of the book a week later, that says a lot about the cardboard cut-out characters. I think Day did much better with her Crossfire series.

Here's the thing: I love Sylvia Day and I loved the Crossfire series. I think she is an excellent writer and I love the characters she creates. However, I just did not love Afterburn. Honestly, it was almost a DNF for me. The book was too short, yes. It took me until about 80% of the way into the book before I actually got interested. I feel like the back story between Jax and Gia wasn't really enough for me as a reader. I also felt like there needed to be a little more about Jax and his hesitance for the relationship. I realize there will be a book two and hopefully that will have some answers, but i feel like I needed a little something to actually pull me in for his character. The thing I enjoyed most about the book was the Rossi family and how close they were. I will read book two, but I just wasn't thrilled about this first book.
