So, zombies. ... Zombie apocalypse is no joking matter, this book taught me. (And I've made many tasteless jokes about zombie apocalypse during this pandemic.) I've watched a lot of zombie movies but this book beats them all in bleak hopelessness and desperation. I rated this 4 stars rather than 3, because there were these sparkling moments throughout the story where the characters really impressed me with how resilient and selfless people can be, even or especially among all the horrors and despair.

I didn't know this was book 2 in a series (duology?) while I was reading this. Perhaps that's very dense of me, but even while wondering why there wasn't any background story given for Walt and Joey, I had no clue there was a book 1. At the very beginning of this book, there's a scene where Walt and Joey are nearly surrounded by a horde of zombies, with only one bullet left in Walt's gun. And Walt puts the gun to Joey's head. If that isn't true love, I don't even... Giving the quick death to the one he loves and leave himself to face a scary and painful end. So I loved these guys a lot right from the beginning, and was determined to keep reading to find out their and their world's fate.

Now the parts I liked less, or why I considered giving it a 3 star: Mostly in the first half of the story, sometimes the story kind of back-stepped to show brief glimpses of a character's past, when right before there was a mini cliffhanger. That made me impatient because I wanted to know what was happening now, not before. :p Oh, and Jeanette. I thought she was a bit too stupid and short-sighted. She frustrated me a lot, but she grew on me eventually.

By the last 3rd of the book, I started to care about (not necessarily like but at least invested in their stories) all of the main characters. (Not Christoph, but I don't consider him one of the main cast.) I really liked this story. I'll have to buy the first book and read that another time.
