Adelaide is a twenty something American who studied abroad in London during college and has stayed there as she begins her career.  She has a big heart and goes above and beyond, making personal sacrifices to make the people in her life feel special.    With her professional life starting out on the right track, she hopes her personal life will fall into place as well.

Despite its beautiful, floral cover, that might lead you to believe this book is a romance, it is actually quite a heavy read.  This book is not all sunshine and rainbows, but the author kept my attention by building tension and not glossing over Adelaide's situation.   It addresses serious issues such as sexual assault, mental illness, suicide, miscarriage and more, making this book depressing to read in the middle, but the author does a good job of building the characters and helping the reader understand why Adelaide allows the undeserved negative treatment she receives from others.  I am glad I pushed through the tough times with Adelaide to get to the end of the book.

Thanks to the Macmillan Audio Influencer Program for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!

I almost didn’t rate this because it feels like eating someone’s traumas. Take that info for your decision to read (or not)!

This book was not for me. I went into this with the impression that this was a book featuring a story focused on modern dating (and it was? but also wasn’t). This book is not fun or light, it is heavy with strong themes of mental illness (including suicide ideation and attempt) and grief. Aside from the content I didn’t enjoy the style of writing. I didn’t care for all dialogue and thoughts being Italicized. I struggled with how the narrator presented the story and found the book to drag. I think my expectations were off going in and would only recommend this to folks who are looking for sad literary fiction.

*I received the ARC for free from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*

Thank you Netgalley for providing a digital ARC.

When Adelaide finds the man she once met at a party on a dating app, she knows instantly that they are meant to be together. In fact, upon their first meeting she told him he looked like a "Disney prince" and when he hardly responded she was sure she'd never see him again, but fate must be what's brought them together. Quickly she finds herself falling in love with the charming Englishman Rory. Even as he goes days, sometimes weeks hardly responding to her texts and bailing on plans last minute, Adelaide believes that she must try more and love harder, that their love is worth the fight. However, when
Rory beings mourning the loss of a former loved one, Adelaide throws herself into the supportive role for him, even as she's falling apart.

Oh Adelaide. She is so kind and filled to the brim with love for Rory that she didn't have any left for herself. I loved the way her friends supported her though, and a strong highlight to this read was the love of her friends. This is absolutely a love story but it is not a romance. I believe this story will resonate with many young 20-something women, but please be aware of content warnings before reading because it does delve into some triggering topics.
