There is a lot happening in this snappy, heartfelt Middle Grade novel. Lots of characters, lots of emotion, lots of recipes! There’s humour too, and dreams for happy endings and “what if’s.” And yet I never felt like the author wasn’t managing to pull it all off. For me, so much of the success of a Middle Grade novel is voice, and Kat Yeh’s got voice in her writing to spare. If you’ve seen the movie Waitress, or the Broadway play, this book will remind you of that story and the feelings it evokes - a mix of love and grit and longing. Oh, and I want to try at least one of the over the top recipes. I bet you will too.
