I was drawn in by the wild, firey art style and stayed for the revolutionary rhetoric. These two books violently wrest the focus away from the nobility in a medieval fiction story, turning a classic power struggle into a struggle for equality. I especially love the way that literature is portrayed as powerful in this story, and how our peasant trio continue to pop up in important ways even though they’re “not the main characters”. When I realized that the book is French, I immediately wondered if Tilda is a sort of Joan of Arc character… but fighting first for herself and then for her people, not for a king.

I could read more of this though the ending is bitter-sweet.

Really enjoyed the story and message. I found this a Refreshing twist on the trope where a "righteous monarch" saves the kingdom. My only complaint is that the art -- while absolutely gorgeous -- could be a bit confusing sometimes (not talking about the dream sequences where it made sense). The dialogue also felt a bit clunky at times, but that's likely to be the translation's fault (Finnish)
