In my opinion, summarizing I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak in but a few sentences can never truly do this remarkable novel the justice it undoubtedly deserves. I Am the Messenger begins when a mysterious playing card ends up in the letterbox of Ed Kennedy, causing his uneventful life to become just that little bit more interesting. Scrawled on the face of the card are three seemingly ordinary house addresses and times. At first, they seem completely unrelated, but Ed soon discovers they have one thing in common: they all need help, specifically Ed’s help. During the following months, Ed travels around his washed-up town lending a hand, (delivering “messages”) to those in need, directed by the cards which keep appearing in his letterbox.
Without giving away too many spoilers, I really enjoyed the way that Zusak highlighted personal struggles so many people experience on a daily basis. I feel like some of the topics tackled in this novel are rarely ever discussed in the media or anywhere for that matter, and I appreciate that I Am the Messenger does this.

Wow. The ending was so weird, but amazing! It literally makes you think. I usually don't get much out of books, except for their story, and that is totally fine. That's why I read. To get away from realitiy. But this. Damn.
The story itself was very captivating too. I mean, I read this 400-page book in two days. The concept was a little weird, but it was good. But this stupid. Stylistic devices. You do Not. Need to end. The sentences. Every three words!

I loved it until the end. The ending was confusing and I didn't find it very satisfying.

4.5 stars. A glorious reminder to live. A solid 4 stars until the end - as I read the ending I thought I hated it, then I decided I loved it.

The dude can write a nicely understated sentence, and the story is engaging, but not all that great. And I didn't go for the twist at the end.
