Illusion suffers from middle book syndrome and a lack of an arc not only for the characters but also the story at large.

What i wrote in this review previously got deleted to so i’ll try to summarize again.

First… i’m rating 2 stars purely out of pettiness. This book got on nerves i didn’t even know for be gotten on  and i could not enjoy this throughly enough to give it more than 2 stars…tho this may truly be a 3 or 3.5 star book at least.

Second, most of my problems layed with Riley. To put it simply, he’s a fucking crybaby who makes recklessly stupid decisions and deals with all of his problems by bursting into tears.

Absolutely shame to people with leaking taps in their eyes but in his instance, he rlly was no help.

Sobbing his eyes out wasnt gonna fix jackshit so it would’ve been much appreciated if he could actually spend some time thinking about solutions instead of getting snot on everyone’s shirts and making them come up with something themselves.

His moral compass also make me want to strangle him. Cannot express how much i detest main characters with some sort of hero complex that would go all around to world to avoid getting blood on their hands. Don’t think i’m saying he needed to flip a switch about start killing people without remorse, but the fact that he set himself back bc he didn’t want to cooperate with his “alter” bc they took control and killed Noel’s abuser when they were in a dire situation drives me insane.

“i don’t want to become a murderer 🥺”

OH BOOO FUCKING HOO.

You’re telling me that you would let the fucker who hurt your person in most unthinkable ways live, because you just don’t want hurt anyone!?!! What type of bullshit-

He needs to get a rain check to understand that some people just deserve to die and it’s as simple as that.

The book itself just gave me a headache.

Some things have remained constant in this series:

- Riley will cry at the drop of a hat
- blushing here, pinking of cheeks there
- chuckles and chortles all around
- angels acting like children (maybe since they're never actually children, they are just perpetually immature)

All this shit annoys me, but I'm still reading, so I guess that says something about the author's ability to create compelling characters. This was another book without a lot of plot progression, so I'm hoping things will move along in the next one.

I did really like that Noel's trauma was taken seriously and he didn't bounce back like nothing happened. I hated that Gideon was mostly absent from this book. We have a really good grasp on Noel and Jai's characters but Gideon barely interacts at all with Riley so it's weird that Riley is as in love with him as the other two. I also really like that in this harem, they're having trouble accepting each other and the jealousy that comes with it because most other harems with already established groups of guys who meet someone they all like are okay with sharing because they "already know and trust each other" (which honestly sometimes feels like a cop-out) so this is much more interesting and angsty.

Summary: The guys help Noel with his trauma, they have to deal with angel politics, things come to a head with Noel and Jai finding out about each other and Ms. Janet comes back.
