I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.

Note: This book is part of a series. It will spoil the earlier books for you, so if you plan to read all of them, start at the beginning. I didn't and it was a mistake.

This book is the story of a doctor, and father of the small town mayor, who is charged with murder, but it may have been physician assisted suicide, but it also may have been none of those things. We don't know. Luckily, we are going to sit in the courtroom for his trial and we may get some answers. At the same time, we are following the local domestic terrorist group that is a cell of the KKK, because they have a stake in harming both the doctor and the mayor. Did they do the murder? Did they kill some other people? Of course, they did some terrible things, but is the sheriff in on it? Keep reading to find out.

This is a big book and the first time I picked it up, I put it right back down. I ended up listening to it and really enjoyed it in that format. It is a long book, but it is very fast paced, so it didn't feel terribly heavy. The story is captivating but it dark at times. There is a lot of racism, mostly blatant, and harm against people of color. There are portions that might be hard to read for people who are sensitive to things like gang rape and lynching. Oh, that's all of us. Even so, I enjoyed this book.
