I tend to describe a lot of books as breezy, but look, this one's as readable as they come. I had a blast with this despite knowing close to nothing about it or Lackey as an author in general. I have also never encountered a more in-his-feelings, softer teen in any fantasy work I've read. This is as much about showing you a cool fantasy world with mages and unicorns as it is about a kid discovering gay people exist and he can be one and by god is he going to, throwing himself head first at the most beautiful mage he's known who also happens to be the first person to give him the time of day other than his sister. Dysfunctional codependency? never heard of it. Also, there's so many horses this is one for the horse lovers out there for sure.
