Deserves more hype and more love.
A lyrical story of the tragedy of being abused, of being part of systemic racism and killings.
It’s chilling and haunting, and poetic, and doesn’t let go.

Definitely check the trigger warnings! Such a complex and lyrical book, I've never read anything like it. Blends some Egyptian mythology with magical realism and supernatural themes. The writing is poetic and lyrical

Creatures of Passage is a very heavy and abstract speculative fiction, that reads like poetry and feels like mythology. Taking inspiration from Egyptian mythology, Yejidé navigates a somewhat simple story of a broken family in 70’s Washington DC through wave after wave of philosophy, culture, grief, and trauma. This is a beautifully written story, but you can’t escape the weight of it. This is not horror, but it is haunting.

The pace is slow and I do wish I had looked up the trigger warnings before jumping into this. I’m not sure I was mentally ready for some of the child stuff that this novel revolves around. While not exactly graphic, Yejidé does put you face to face with it.

3.5 to 4 stars. I’m teetering between the two.

WARNING: Check the content warnings of the book because the blurb does not focus on what is the most important part of the story!

While Nephthys' story is important and ties together the stories of other people, it is not the most important plotline nor is she the most important character Instead, the main important storyline focuses around
a child molester and their many victims.
While for me that was not a problem, i probably wouldn't have chosen the book to read should I have known this.

I struggled with this book. It has some fascinating ideas and was excellent in parts, but seemed to be muddled in others. The language, which some have described as beautiful, I found pointlessly pretentious. The story rambled, despite being a short book, and went off on long tangents. But nevertheless kept me reading until the end.

This is a novel about how we live and how we die. The sort of mark we want to leave behind when we leave this relm of existence.

Very poetically written and a beautifully performed audio book by the author.  it is,also a book abort how badly adults can treat children at times and those on the fringes of society you may walk past on the street and discuss.  Love thy neighbour we all need safe passage.
