The timeline of this story ebbs and flows as does the river on which it is set. The structure of the novel uses Egyptian mythology and turns the Eastern U.S. into Kingdoms. The Kinwell family provides a link between the living and the dead. A beautiful tale of connection, pain, and melancholy set in the 1970s.

Definitely check the trigger warnings! Such a complex and lyrical book, I've never read anything like it. Blends some Egyptian mythology with magical realism and supernatural themes. The writing is poetic and lyrical

I'm grappling with how to describe this book, but I'm sure I'll be thinking about it for a long time.

It was a very challenging and unsettling read at times - content warning for child sexual abuse (including the abuser's perspective at several points, so please take care of yourself if that's not something you're ok to read), a range of mental health issues and substance use.

Poetic prose, atmospheric writing, and haunting characters. It is definitely a book that will stick with me.
