A classic case of wrong book at the wrong time. Just was in a reading slump and struggled to get through this.

The book is beautifully lyrical and has the exact right aura of mysticism, but some of it was a hard read.

Need more black joy.

This is a novel about how we live and how we die. The sort of mark we want to leave behind when we leave this relm of existence.

Very poetically written and a beautifully performed audio book by the author.  it is,also a book abort how badly adults can treat children at times and those on the fringes of society you may walk past on the street and discuss.  Love thy neighbour we all need safe passage.

This book was pretty weird and pretty sad, but definitely a really interesting story. The setting was a combination of trying to accurately portray Anacostia in the late 70s and the elements of magic and fantasy that Yejide added in, but together they do make for a cool story. Having ghosts and supernatural elements allowed the idea that everything is hopelessly connected to people and events from the past, present, and future to really be fleshed. Characters would be thinking or doing things that were directly tied to their ancestors or would directly lead to movements in the future without realizing it, but the magical elements revealed those connections to the reader. And while almost all of the events of the novel are sad, they do also reveal the ties that bind the community together in spite of them.
