While certainly long, this was well done. Reminds me some of King’s The Stand. Hard to believe he wrote this before Covid.

It is mind blowing to think that this book was published PRE-COVID.

I enjoyed the character development and didn’t cringe with the medical speak and references (as a medical professional).

It left me wanting more and thinking about the bigger picture and the unknown of AI as we forge ahead giving it free reign in our society.

This book will stick with me a long time. What at first feels like an outbreak book suddenly becomes entrenched in themes of radical extremism, AI and found family.  I loved this book-but it was so emotionally hard to read and, as such took me forever to finish.  I cannot believe this book was written in 2019 and not a response to events of 2020.

I want to start out with, “This is a very good book.”, because that is what I want to be the main point of this review. That said, this is a brutal book, particularly when read in the current day U.S. of 2023. Be prepared for that, if that applies to you. I think a lot of that has to do with timing of when I read it, in the wake of everything that has happened & is still happening in this world since this book was published. If this was not such a well-written book, I don’t know if I could’ve stuck with it to the end. I wish I had a little more distance from the real world to have been able to enjoy the experience of this book more thoroughly. I definitely plan on following up with Wayward but I need a bit of a break for my own sanity.
