Wow! As a horror fan, I was extremely pleased with this book! It was pleasantly surprising to find a YA book that had the ability to open my eyes a little wider when the monster gets someone. Plus "The Monstrumologist" is just such a unique and interesting name. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves horror, because this book will give you the willies. I would also think that any science lovers would enjoy this book because it puts a surprisingly scientific twist on monsters.

"The Monstrumologist" has a old timey, almost Sherlock Holmes feeling. It takes place in early American history. As such, the language is very proper and different than we are used too. If I were to use this book in my class, it would almost have to be an audiobook, because I fear many kids would not be engaged enough. I also think that this is not a book that a new teacher should use. It has some very graphic imagines, and so it might be a little too much. You could potentially use it in a senior class as a SAT prep and test students on the vocabulary used in that period of time.

Rick Yancey has done it again! I didn't think anything could live up to "The 5th Wave," but clearly I was wrong! This novel (which was written well before the previously mentioned one) is an amazing show of just how descriptive and mind-blowing Yancey's writing can truly be.

This is a densely descriptive murder-mystery type novel involving monsters! To compare it to something similar, it has the old-time, mad scientist feel of "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley!

The story takes place from the point of view of a boy named Will Henry who is somewhat of an apprentice monstrumologist to Dr. Warthrop. A monstrumologist? Ah, yes! A monstrumologist is someone who studies monsters... In this book, the anthropophagi is the creature of interest - a headless beast standing over 6' tall with a mouth in its chest!

At times this book is a little hard to read because it has a lot of description and action packed into each chapter, but if you have time to sit down and read 75-100pg at a time, it's the book for you! As a reader, you really come to connect with the orphaned Will Henry and Dr. Warthrop, who you learn also had a troubling relationship with this father.

This is a book that you will be imagining quite vividly, from the chilly, dank cemeteries, to the scenes of maggots and flies that make your skin crawl. This is an exciting, scary journey that you feel like you're a part of! I absolutely love this book and recommend it to anyone, no matter their favorite genre!

Great dark horror for the YA crowd. Can't wait for the sequel.

I loved this book!!! It’s creepy and weird and totally unhinged, in the best ways possible. It is horror and yes it is YA, but i have never read anything like it. I find many YA books tend to read the same and don’t creep me out too much bur this is so different and i love it for that.

This is up there for me. And I read a lot. I also loved that the main character was a boy. There are so many YA books with strong baddie girls becoming women, which i do appreciate. But it was nice to see a boy lead which i feel like we don’t get much of anymore.

Great world building, great suspense, great story.

A lot more horror than I usually read but still enjoyable. Sort of bogged down in a lot of words though - I ended up skimming to get to the action parts. I get the trope Yancey was going for but a little editing couldn't have hurt. That said, Will Henry is fantastic as a young hero and though the rest of the characters are kind of reprehensible, you like them despite yourself.
