the only reason it’s not 5 is because of the traumatic ending.

This book threw me for a loop because I was anticipating it being book #2, but it's definitely a prequel novella.

This book is broken up into 5 parts and chronicles Celaena's life before she was sent to the Salt Mines of Andovir. I loved this book because it filled some character development holes that I was feeling while reading book #1.
SpoilerIt's incredibly clear that Celaena has a trauma-filled past, between Arobynn and the missions he sent her on, to falling in love with and losing Sam, to thinking she had finally found her freedom from the guild, to being betrayed AGAIN by Arobynn (the biggest reminder to me that Celaena is a TEENAGER, as she was fooled AGAIN and believes that Arobynn is GOOD.
