Quite a long journey with many turns and surprises. Jane is very sympathetic and Edward Rochester facinating.

I got an illustrated Jane Eyre in 4th grade. Precocious, yes, but I loved it.

Courageous Jane Eyre is the queen of fresh new starts. With every obstacle she faces, she rises higher than before. So I have to say that I've read this at an entirely relevant period of my life. She takes what she's given and against the odds somehow manages to excel. Needless to say, she's a woman without connections at a time where that meant everything. The book has strong themes of justice & mercy, which flip from complete unfairness at the start, to what is just by the end.

This is the first Bronte novel I've read in at least 10 years, and I've been reminded of how much I enjoy them. Why read Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, when you can just rely on a Bronte engraining of ghosts & things that go bump in the night?

Though, I have to say that I completely fail to share in other people's love for Mr Rochester. There just isn't enough change in him by the end of the story and arguably most of his humility is brought about by losing his sight/hand, rather than any penance paid (aside from a year of self pity and being miserable by himself, thinking Jane dead). Jane, rational til the end, loves him despite his visual imperfections, and I feel many readers are evoked by her narration rather than what was actually there. It becomes sweet to love a disabled Rochester, rather than the selfish & frivolous man he was before. Perhaps I need more readings to understand his character better. I am firmly staying in the Mr Darcy camp, who at least made efforts to correct his mistakes.

Beautiful, a little dark, and romantic. I highly recommend it.
