My favorite book in the series, which I am rereading now.

This book still holds up. It’s my favorite in the series for many reasons.

First of all, Stormcaster gives the reader some answers to some questions. We finally learn some of the truth to the most mysterious characters: Destin Karn, Evan Strangward, and the empress Celestine. We learn a bit more about the mysterious magemarked. It gives enough answers yet leaves you with enough questions to leave you anticipating the next book.

There’s also a lot of political machinations going on in this book. Secrets are being kept and revealed, rebellions are rising, and the ultimate uniting threat to our scattered main characters is emerging. The unlikely alliances between various main characters are expanding throughout this book.

The romance featured in the beginning of Stormcaster is also my favorite of the various couples that show up in the series. Not to spoil anything, but it gives insight to certain parts of Flamecaster as well as just being a well written romance. It means that the book starts off a bit slow, but it’s necessary and pays off in how it builds the characters involved.

My favorite character in the series is Destin Karn, and he really begins to shine in this book. I fell in love with his character here. He is truly one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. His newly revealed motivations are part of what makes this book my favorite of the series.

part of what makes this book so special to me is it’s gay characters and the beginning 1/4 of the book focusing on them. Especially when I first read Stormcaster, I really held onto the representation of an interesting and compelling gay romance. Destin Karn is incredibly relatable to me in many ways, one of those is through his queerness. I read Stormcaster in middle school, and it was some of the first gay representation I ever got my hands on, so I will always hold a special place in my heart for it because of that. Destin and Evan are given room to be complex yet still have a very sweet and heartfelt romance together, one that means a lot to me.
