Ho hum. Another snore fest. With the blurb from Franzen on the front and the spin I'd gleaned from the internet I thought I was in for a real treat. Ecoterroism. Interesting. Wow. Lucky it was short. Well-written. But ultimately about a restless woman bouncing around in relationships in an open marriage. Which could be entertaining but ultimately wasn't.

Zink is a manic. She writes freneticly and brutally. Her characters are selfish and odd but intriguing. There is no fat in this short book. Zink has a knack for succint and detatched description which is sometimes confronting. The only thing I've read like it is her other novel 'Mislaid'.

I very much enjoyed the writing style and I'd say I enjoyed about two thirds of the book. While about a third I found hard to get through. At times it flowed really well and I'd find myself enjoying the words and the sentences as well as what was happening in the plot. At other times it felt slow and dull. But then perhaps that was on purpose, as perhaps the book itself is a metaphor for the marriage depicted. Quite a strange read, but I think strange is a good way. Definitely interesting and I look forward to exploring more of Zink's work.
