Overall uninspired by this book. While the mystery was ok, the writing fell flat for me. While Bosch helped set the standard for male detectives, his character felt overdone. The good old boy atmosphere at the police department doesn't have me interested in another in the series.

Probably more like "3 1/2" stars - a very skillfully rendered mystery updating the LA noir genre. Unfortunately, I saw the TV version first and I think this is a rare example of the TV update surpassing the book - it's much more nuanced and the characters are better developed.

I loved everything about the book, but I felt like the ending fell short.

This is my first read of a Harry Bosch book - I was tempted because it was on offer, and glad I did. Purchased the second in the series half way through in fact.
The book itself follows the well used loner cop with a few personal problems, but the characters are well drawn and interesting. The story itself is well crafted and interesting, and the city is really nicely described. Given the book is now 25 years old, there are some bits of the that make you smile given todays connected world. Of course any Vietnam vets are now far older than Bosch's character, but that did not bother me in the least, and I am happy to have a new series of books to read.
