I don't like the ending and couple of panels (The art sometimes sucks) but other than that, I really enjoyed the book.

Batman
You gave my book two stars?

Me
Yes, it was boring and too political. Who wants a bunch of boring politics?
I couldn't take it anymore...and I've always been your fangirl.

With each passing day I like this comic book less and less, as I do with Miller's whole body of work. I seem to low key agree with Moore and his vision of superheroes to some degree.

As it's taken so seriously and has had such an "impact" in the industry, you would think that it would have some value in the discussion of superheroes, but it doesn't.

This is an ugly book, both in visual terms and at the very core of its ideas. I still remember thinking Miller was doing some sort of commentary on the problematic influence heroes like Batman could have, and their debatable necessity in society, something akin to Watchmen. But Watchmen is influenced by Moore's anarchist ideas, and this book is not interested in discussing superheroes. Miller reaches the conclusion that they are, in fact, awesome before even sitting down to write. He wasn't interested in discovering something along the journey that creative work can bring, only in the Dark Knight himself, and how necessary it is to have a billionaire kicking people in the ass every night because they are beyond help, and need a shepherd of righteousness to guide them.

I like Year One because it doesn't necessarily reach a conclusion on Batman. You can think of any scenario happening afterwards making sense and it works just fine that way. And it's probably Miller's onliest book to date that I've liked.

I also don't find this comic book either enjoyable or worthy of its appraisal, it's a disgustingly reactionary piece of propaganda that has aged like the cheapest of milks. And I do not think Miller should be put in the same league as some of the most interesting comics writers of its time such as Moore or Gaiman. What's more important is, those guys moved on. They had a career afterwards, and got praise beyond their initial success. Miller only got worse and more disgustingly reactionary as time went by...

Read this graphic novel when I was in high school and it was time for a re-read...and once again it did not fail to disappoint. If Christopher Nolan is still making Batman movies in years to come, I hope he gives this one a shot.

An edited review of this book will come sooner or later, this last one was pretty bad.

Beginning this book I wasn't a fan, honestly it took some trying to get into it. I assure you I am a Batman fan! As the story moves along it pulls you into a world that's as dark as any Batman story. The storytelling at times is too much, but at other points it's so well done it reads like a novel. I can't say when for sure but this book hooked me I was in, and in deep! It's a must read for Batman fans.

This is my first exposure to the Batman comics, & I must say this: HOW COULD YOU NOT LOVE BATMAN??? I've always been a fan, but he's such a bad@$$ in this chunk of the series! Batman on a horse... that's all you need to know :)
