Just finished and I'm thinking this is my favorite in the series so far. The latter half of the book...hot damn! This is what I've been waiting for in the series; being able to divulge into what's actually going on, which isn't exactly a ware between mankind and elves, but rather something grand and spiritual, something ancient and mystical.
If anything, I'm starting to see that maybe the entire story is a game of chess--we just can't decipher who's the pieces and who's the players. The best part is how Michael J. Sullivan makes it look like there's multiple games being played, and some of our characters believe they're the ones moving the pieces, which, later we discover, is not the case.
Nyprhon is so focused on the war he can't see that Tesh is killing all of his friends. "A pawn is a pawn," is something I'm sure he's thinking. Tesh is so focused on his revenge that he can't see it's turning him into the very evil he's vengeful for. There's just so much going on with these characters, and although I'd like to list them out, that's not why you're reading this.
You want to know if the series is worth continuing, which, in my opinion, absolutely!
If you're like me, you've read the first three books and felt good about it. Not great, but good. Well, after reading the first half of Age of Legend, you might feel the same, but once you see where the story is leading, you won't be able to stop turning the pages until there's none left. The plot takes a wicked turn and sets up the remainder of the story down an epic path. Finally, all the pieces hinted at through the prior books are tired in somehow; We get to learn more about the gods, mysterious characters are defined and established, character development is at its finest, story-telling is beautifully written, questions are answered while more mysteries unfold.
It's honestly like Michael J. Sullivan set up the entire series for these last few books, and I'm excited to get started. You'll feel a tug at your strings, a laugh in your belly, and a lump in your throat.
