Medium paced, my ass. This book was very slow and hard for me to get into, but I have several friends who loved it. So maybe it just hit me the wrong way? I really respect Lahiri and loved The Lowland. I found this one to be profoundly depressing and mundane. Particularly the romantic relationships were very formulaic and predictable. I also hate that the sister was not given more of a prominent role in the story.
