Even though it's just a straightforward retelling of the myths, it was very engaging. Especially as someone who didn't know a lot about this specific story going into it, I couldn't put it down. It's a story that makes it make sense that it would survive thousands of years of oral tradition.

JK. (Well, not jk, this book is actually very sad, but I digress.) This book was really good! The writing was spectacular, and I loved the weight Saint was able to put into her writing. That being said, I had a few problems it.
 I think my biggest problem with the book is how I feel like the Minotaur wasn’t explored fully; I feel as though the writing was setting up for Ariadne to explore her feelings about her brother, and how she felt about Theseus killing him, or anything like that, because it is alluded to briefly that she does have some mixed emotions regarding her brother. I just felt like that was really glossed over, and it bugged me for the rest of the novel. Overall, I did feel that way for a lot of things regarding this novel: I feel like a lot of things were glossed over when they should have been expanded, and a lot of things were expanded when they should have been glossed over.

Ariadne is a princess of Crete when she helps Theseus defeat the minotaur, setting in motion a series of events that will alter the rest of her life.

This was a reread for me, and I really enjoyed it both times! In my first read, I remember disliking the ending, and this time around I understand it more but still find it abysmally sad, hence my rating remaining at 4 stars. That said, the writing here is impeccable, and I love the story structure and alternating chapters from Ariadne and Phaedra’s perspectives. I also feel like this is told in a very approachable way and is easy to understand even without much background context.

This is also super fast paced (I listened to the audiobook in just a couple sittings) and Ariadne is a top tier heroine for me. Thoroughly enjoyed, and a fantastic July pick from my book club!

Reading this book made me update my content warnings afterwards haha! I enjoyed learning about the two sisters and the heroes/gods they were tangled up with. This isn’t a comment on the writing style, as I thought Saint told the story well, but reading Ariadne and Phaedra’s story and seeing it unravel was a bit like watching a car crash - horrifying but you can’t really look away. I thought the experience of Postpartum Depression was very well written, especially in contrast to the other character’s experience of motherhood. I raced through reading this book and I think it was good to stretch outside my comfort zone and read a sad/emotional/dark book (not my vibe at all lol) but I’ll be paying more attention to content warnings and mood in the future!

I have loved the Greek stories my entire life. As a woman who is currently examing the place of women in history, a Greek tale from a woman's point of view that was sitting on a shelf in my library intrigued me enough to check it out and I was not disappointed in my choice. 
Still a young girl, Ariadne watches what happens to her mother and wonders if she, too, will one day become a victim in a game between the gods and men. She is a lucid narrator who leaves the reader sympathic to not only her own story, but the stories of many other women in the book, from the first page to the last. This tale of courage, love, motherhood, heartbreak, and the ever-fickle gods is just what the Greek stories were lacking.

The Ariadne book is beautifully narrated and the voices for the various characters are convincing and varied enough to not cause confusion.

My favorite part of the book that I was not expecting was seeing chapters from Phaedra's point of view. She offers a good foil for Ariadne and readers definitely grimace as they watch Phaedra's tragic fate unfold.

I was not very familiar with Ariadne nor her story before this book but Saint did a wonderful job traveling through Ariadne's life from childhood to adulthood. I loved the early chapters. The atmosphere was very engrossing and enveloping. I especially enjoyed seeing Ariadne's interactions with Daedalus who was the only one who truly understood her. And Asterion. Asterion, the infamous Minotaur, will always be a favorite tragic character of mine and Saint brings even more of a doomed arc to the Minotaur.

Themes of feminism, fate, power, and autonomy are all explored. Feminine rage is also at the forefront as Ariadne considers her life and everything that contributed to it. Some of it felt heavy handed and a little repetitive in certain parts (especially as Ariadne is alone on Naxus) in my opinion. But I still think it's important to portray.

Overall, I enjoyed the writing style but like I said some parts just felt very repetitive to me.
