This was absolutely enthralling. Like I literally could not turn the pages fast enough. I could feel my heart beating as I got closer and closer to learning who died on trivia night and why. Jane, Madeline, and Celeste are wonderfully complex, three-dimensional, flawed characters. And, obviously, it’s a great dissection of white suburban life and politics. 

Contemporary books tend to annoy me, because I often find the tone to be too flippant. But I think I’ve just been reading the wrong contemporary authors. Liane Moriarty kept it perfectly serious and tense when it needed to be, and balanced it just right with a dash of lightheartedness and humor.

WOW I read this one on a whim and I really liked it!

This is peak real housewives energy and I too beef with 5 year olds and their shitty parents

On a serious note

the domestic violence reveal was something I was NOT expecting but I really think the portrayal was executed very respectfully. Also, the reveal of Perry as the real father gagged me.

 

I’m impressed on how the author was able to balance the tone between humor and seriousness. I thought the pacing maybe leaned on the side of too fast but overall it was engaging!
