Just as good as the first time I read it in the 80s.

The writing style, particularly the awkward and confusing description of place, failed to draw me in to the story. Characters were mostly unengaging. Despite these caveats the story was worth a read simply for the scale of imagination on show.

Not a bad book by any means; just not a book I would recommend.

Technically a re-read, but in a new volume. Eon may have been the first adult science fiction book I read. It's certainly the first I remember reading. I would have been eighteen when it was published but I seem to remember getting it for my birthday or Christmas, so probably nineteen when I read it. I doubt I understood it as much back then as I did now. And, even so, there are sections when I shrugged and moved on - it's common for me to do so with "hard" SF,  but that doesn't stop me enjoying it.

It's interesting that six years after initial publication the world changed, making one of the central themes redundant. However, events of the past few years may well have brought it back into sharp focus.

Great book. Great ideas. Decent enough characters. Well written.

Starts off very interesting, loses itself in the middle with some space politics ( not the fun kind, the tedious kind) and finishes on an interesting note again.

I kept trying, but 100 pages in, I still wasn't engaged. The outdated politics were a stumbling block, as was the prostitute. Why?

Also, "he looked more Irish than German"--wut?
